A BRIEF HISTORY OF BREADSALL BOWLS CLUB
1988
Club founded with 16 members following initial meeting in Breadsall Scout Hut.
1989
First playing season using the green at the Railway sports ground (near what is now the Wyvern Centre). Area to rear of Playing Fields belonging to Parish Council but farmed by D Knifton to be reintegrated into sports field for construction of green.
Planning application for new green and clubhouse submitted.
Ground levelling started towards end of year.
1990
Railway green still used for matches. Planning permission for clubhouse refused.
New planning application for green only submitted and approved. Appeal submitted against refusal of clubhouse. Work carried out on basic formation of green.
1991
Green preparation continues and green is seeded. Belper indoors league joined for winter activity. Clubhouse Appeal won.
1992
Green brought into use. Shelter (now known as the hut) constructed. Reconditioned mower bought. Water supply layed on. Store in school grounds rented for equipment storage. Full planning application for clubhouse submitted and approved (Jan-Mar).
Building regulation application for clubhouse submitted and approved (Aug-Sept).
1993
Fundraising continues and foundations for clubhouse layed.
1994
£12000 grant obtained from The Foundation for Sports and Art towards clubhouse construction. Building work continues at a faster pace.
1995
Clubhouse completed and electricity layed on.
1996
Retaining wall, steps and tank support to south side of green constructed. Clubhouse canopy constructed.
1997
Container to house equipment bought and renting of school store ends.
1998
Consolidation and continued fundraising.
1999
Planning application for floodlights submitted and approved.
2000
Work starts on hard and soft landscaping of surrounds.
2001
Landscaping completed.
2002
Adjoining drive graded and stoned.
2003
Watering system installed.
2004
Cables layed for floodlights.
2005
Small maintenance jobs and start of loan repayment.
2006
Four second hand floodlights installed.
2007
Wyvern Bowls Club dissolved. New mower bought.
2008
Maintenance only.
2009
Container broken into and equipment including mower stolen. Insurance claimed and new mower bought.
2010
Gates to both ways in installed.
2011
Four floodlights upgraded. Applied to join the Floodlit league.
2012
Plastic gulley edging bought for winter installation.
2013
Several new members join.
2014
Continued maintenance of green to improve quality and appearance.
2015
Installed burglar alarm system.
2016
Entered a team in the South Derbyshire Vet's League and won the Memorial Handicap Cup.
2017
Several new members join and a second team entered in the Floodlit League. Also 2 extra floodlights added to the existing 4.
2018
Club house revamped and decorated. Lost our Ladies team but a new team entered into the South Derbyshire Tuesday League. Retaining boards replaced round 50% of the green.
